Elche is a UNESCO World Heritage site for two reasons at once: the Palmeral — the largest palm oasis in Europe — and the Misteri d'Elx, a medieval sung mystery play staged each August in the Basilica of Santa María. The coast, almost 10 km of dunes and beaches, is a windsurf and kitesurf destination thanks to its wind exposure, and the city has its own international airport. With no marina of its own, the nautical offering is supported by neighbouring Santa Pola.
